The distance from the lowest point of Death Valley to the peak of Mount Whitney is less than 200 miles (322 km). Indeed, almost all of southeastern California is arid desert, with extremely high temperatures during the summer. California boasts an abundance of mountains, with the Sierra Nevada Range spanning the California-Nevada border for 400 miles (600 kilometers). This mountain range is also home to the tallest peak in the continental United States, Mount Whitney, reaching an altitude of 14,494 ft (4,418 mt) above sea level. Additionally, Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta are notable landmarks, both of which are extinct volcanoes.

California is bounded by the U.S. state of Oregon to the north, by the states of Nevada and Arizona to the east, by the Mexican state of Baja California to the south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. From the rainy northern coast to the parched Colorado Desert in the south, and from the Mediterranean-like central and southern littoral to the volcanic plateau of the far northeast, California is a land of stunning physical contrasts. Both the highest and lowest points in the 48 conterminous states are in the state of California—Mount Whitney and Death Valley, respectively.

In addition to oil from California, California’s refineries process crude oil from Alaska and foreign suppliers. California’s crude oil output accounts for more than one-tenth of total U.S. production. Drilling operations are concentrated primarily in Kern County and the Los Angeles basin. Although there is also substantial offshore oil and gas production, there is a permanent moratorium on new offshore oil and gas leasing in California waters and a deferral of leasing in federal waters. Although California is a leader in some energy-intensive industries, the state has one of the lowest per capita energy consumption rates in the country.

Inter-city rail travel is provided by Amtrak California; the three routes, the Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner, and San Joaquin, are funded by Caltrans. These services are the busiest intercity rail lines in the U.S. outside the Northeast Corridor and ridership is continuing to set records. The routes are becoming increasingly popular over flying, especially on the LAX-SFO route.321 Integrated subway and light rail networks are found in Los Angeles (Los Angeles Metro Rail) and San Francisco (Muni Metro). In the 2016 U.S. presidential election, California had the third highest percentage of Democratic votes behind the District of Columbia and Hawaii.362 In the 2020 U.S. presidential election, it had the 6th highest behind D.C., Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Hawaii. Take in the endless vistas at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, which happens to be the largest state park in California at more than 640,000 acres. While it’s known for stunning super blooms in the spring, the park is scenic year-round. It’s a stellar place for hiking, admiring avant-garde art at nearby Galleta Meadows, or camping out under the stars in one of the park’s developed or primitive campgrounds. While the entire city of Santa Monica is worth making a trip for, the iconic Santa Monica Pier, which officially marks the end of the famed Route 66, should not be missed. The roughly 1,600-foot pier is home to an amusement park featuring a roller coaster, which takes you high above the beach before the short, belly-flipping drop back down.
